Parts of Medicare

The Medicare program is designed to offer basic coverage to assist in paying for doctor visits, procedures, and hospital stays. Medicare is divided into four main parts – A, B, C, and D. Parts A and B are referred to as original Medicare. Parts C and D are offered from private health insurance companies, which means that you will not enroll for these from a Social Security office. Instead, you will pick a private plan from your choice of a carrier. Many people agree that all the various parts of Medicare make this process very confusing. Below you will see all the details associated with the parts of Medicare

The four parts of Medicare:

  1. Part A is the inpatient hospital and nursing care coverage. This part is free for most, if they have worked at least 10 years and paid into Medicare in the U.S.
  2. Part B is the doctor visits and outpatient care coverage.
  3. Part C is a Medicare Advantage plan, which is available only through private insurance companies. This plan often has lower premiums than Medicare Supplements, but you will pay more for copays and coinsurance, which often makes you spend more in the long-run.
  4. Part D is prescription drug coverage, which is also available only through private insurance companies. This plan will require a monthly premium you pay to the insurance carrier. This will give you significantly lower copays on your medications that you would pay if you had not enrolled in a Part D plan.

What about all the other letters? Medicare only has 4 parts. All the others are Medicare Supplement plans. These plans are optional coverage that fill in the gaps in Medicare, which can save you a significant amount of money.
